It’s really, really sad to hear that Teddy Pendergrass has died yesterday at the age of 59.

Pendergrass started his career as a drummer but was soon promoted to vocal duties when his band leader, Harold Melvin, witnessed how Teddy jumped from the rear of a stage and started singing his heart out.

«Harold Melvin And The Blue Notes» (with the voice of Teddy Pendergrass who wasn’t billed until 1975) got signed to Philadelphia International Records in 1972. Gamble & Huff wrote and produced an array of hits for them, including “Don’t Leave Me This Way” and “If You Don’t Know Me By Now”. These songs not only found great chart success but also spawned a series of pretty atrociuos cover versions in the 1980s.

In 1975 Pendergrass left the Blue Notes to pursue a solo career. A string of platinum albums followed but came to an abrupt halt when in 1982 a car accident left Pendergrass paralysed from the waist down.

In 1985 Pendergrass returned to the stage – together with Ashford & Simpson -- for a performance at the Live Aid concert. He continued to record and perform until retiring from the music business in 1975.

On of my all-time favorite endings to a DJ set is the vinyl-only Special Disco Version of «Don’t Leave My This Way». This song just has it all: a pumping bassline, spring-loaded percussion, the typically lush Gamble & Huff string arrangements and a vocal delivery that breaks my heart each time I hear it. Goosebumb material!
